All four The University of Osaka libraries have introduced the world's highest standard*1 facial recognition

The University of Osaka (Location: Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, President: Jun Kumanogoh, hereinafter referred to as “UOsaka”), Kinokuniya Bookstore Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Yukio Fujinari, hereinafter referred to as Kinokuniya Bookstore) and Panasonic Connect Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director, Executive Officer, President/CEO: Yasuyuki Higuchi, hereinafter referred to as Panasonic Connect) announced that in a first for a national university*2, the group will install entrance gates and automatic lending/return machines that utilize facial recognition technology in all four of UOsaka's affiliated libraries. The entrance gates are scheduled to begin operation in May 2025, and the automatic lending/return machines in the fall of 2025. By linking with UOsaka's integrated ID platform OUID, we will achieve a comfortable campus life for approximately 30,000 students and faculty members, and more efficient lending management operations

Overview

In 2024, UOsaka will build an integrated ID platform called the "OUID System" that assumes lifelong ID utilization before enrollment, after graduation, and after retirement, in addition to approximately 30,000 enrolled students, faculty and staff. As the first application using OUID, it established a facial recognition admission management system in April 2024, and are gradually expanding buildings and conference rooms that can enter and exit buildings using facial recognition.

Kinokuniya Bookstore is pleased to announce that all four UOsaka libraries (General Library, Life Science Library, Science and Engineering Library, and Foreign Studies Library) have newly installed seven entrance gates and six automatic check-out and return devices in conjunction with Panasonic Connect's facial recognition technology, which boasts the world’s highest level of authentication accuracy*1.

In addition, by installing a QR reader that supports QR codes displayed on UOsaka's digital student ID and faculty ID cards, which began offering in January 2025, we have taken into account the needs of diverse users and expanded the use of digital student ID cards and faculty ID cards.

By linking various systems with OUID, UOsaka will create a comfortable campus life for approximately 30,000 students, faculty, and staff, and promote the efficiency of libraries and other operations, labor saving, and service improvements

Background

The total number of visitors to the UOsaka Library exceeds 950,000 per year, and the number of books borrowed exceeds 330,000 per year. Until now, we have provided a comfortable, secure, and stable library environment and stable collection for library users by managing admission to the library with student ID cards for students and library user cards for others (except for foreign studies libraries), managing the illegal removal of books from the collection at the exit gate, and automating the process of borrowing and returning books (excluding Life Science libraries).

However, students can enter the library and borrow books with a magnetic student ID, but faculty and staff cannot use their faculty ID card to enter the library or borrow books, so they had to apply for a library user card. For this reason, the issuance and management of user cards was a heavy burden on library staff

Using facial recognition technology to realize a state-of-the-art library system

This time, the "OU Human Resources Data Platform" is a platform that connects human resource data related to the UOsaka community (examinees, current students, alumni, faculty, staff, etc.) with a unique lifetime ID, OUID, and centrally manages, analyzes, and utilizes it under strict security management by linking it with the world's highest level of authentication accuracy face recognition technology, we will realize admission to the library and borrowing books using face recognition. Perform face recognition based on the face photos and attribute information of students, faculty and staff registered in the "OU Human Resources Data Platform" and enter the library. It works with management systems and automatic loan and return equipment. This greatly improves the convenience of users, such as being able to enter the library and borrow books without the hassle of taking out their student ID cards or library cards. In addition to face recognition, we also support QR codes displayed on digital student ID cards and faculty ID cards linked to OUID.

In addition, the University Library will be relieved of the burden of issuing and managing user cards, and will be able to effectively allocate human resources to the development of new library services, such as open access to academic papers, and realize library DX that creates added value for both users and administrators

Future developments

Currently, UOsaka is expanding the OU Human Resources Data Platform, which is a platform for centrally managing, analyzing, and utilizing digital student ID cards/faculty ID cards linked to OUID and the UOsaka community (prospective students, current students, alumni, faculty and staff, etc.) under strict security control.

Regarding the application of facial recognition technology in conjunction with OUID, we aim to further utilize it within the university, such as entrance gates, admission management, access management of conference rooms and rooms, and attendance management for classes and exams.
