Panasonic’s “Facial Recognition gate” streamlines departure/return procedures for international travel

Panasonic’s “Facial Recognition gates” have streamlined the departure and return procedures for Japanese nationals and the departure procedures for foreign nationals at Haneda, Narita, Chubu, Kansai, Fukuoka, New Chitose and Naha. The gate was also set up at airports in Cabo Verde, Africa in 2020.

Designing friendly gates

A large display that is visible from a distance. The gate features a gentle, rounded shape with a soft cream color. The soothing design makes the whole seem unintimidating.

Designing for smooth passenger movement

The Facial Recognition gates feature wide entrances, and facilitate smooth movement through them. Additionally, open spaces are provided to keep luggage from getting in the way.

Authentication designed for natural movement

Passport placement requirements are understandable at a glance. Facial Recognition takes place after passports are authenticated with the camera located behind a mirror to minimize the passenger’s variance from the line of sight as they pass easily through the gate. This allows Facial Recognition scanning to complete as passengers read instructions displayed on the mirror. Placement of the display monitor at the mirrored camera housing is designed to keep passengers’ faces addressing the camera unconsciously.

Panasonic’s “Facial Recognition gate” has been put into operation in Japan at the Immigration Bureau, the Ministry of Justice since October 2017 and at seven major airports: Haneda, Narita, Chubu, Kansai, Fukuoka, New Chitose and Naha. A total of 203 units are now online. In December 2020, 11 units were delivered to four international airports in Cabo Verde, Africa.
